Symbolic Shiloh

Description

Located just behind the peach orchard, this shallow pond supposedly took on a reddish stain from the blood of wounded men and horses who came to either get a drink or die. However, the account describing this scene came many years after the war and the pond's actual existence and appearance at the time of the battle is not clearly known. The levels of chaos and destruction across this ground certainly makes it conceivable that disabled men of both sides would rest at the water's edge. This "Bloody Pond" became another battlefield landmark and a symbol of Shiloh's violence.
