Detecting Movement
Description
As Stonewall Jackson's troops marched past this gap in the trees during their famous flank march, some Union lookouts spotted their movements and forwarded the information up to General Daniel Sickles. Federal artillery responded by delivering some fire on the column. Hardly any casualties were sustained but it became known that some elements of Jackson's force were altering their placements. Interpretation and knowledge of those exact movements were either not entirely understood or communicated. Of course, Jackson would later surprise and strike Oliver O. Howard's Eleventh Corps flank and overrun those Union camps.
