2nd Ohio Infantry

Description

Dedicated in 1894, the acorn monument to the 2nd Ohio Infantry stands at the intersection of Battleline and Alexander Bridge Roads. As a part of Scribner's Brigade, Baird's Division, 14th Corps (Army of the Cumberland), the regiment was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Obadiah C. Maxwell.

On September 19, 1863, these Buckeye troops advanced with the brigade and ended up taking around 15 or 20 prisoners but were forced to withdraw after encountering Confederates of Cheatham's Division. On September 20, the 2nd held this line and became involved on the flanks where it sustained some of its own losses and prisoners. With a number of 412 engaged, the unit's total casualties throughout the battle were 9 killed, 50 wounded, and 122 captured or missing. Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell was among those wounded.
