Description

This old War Department sign marks the location where Union General Benjamin Prentiss surrendered with around 2,200 other troops in the area of the "Hornet's Nest" on April 6, 1862. Nearby, the 58th Illinois Infantry (Sweeny's Brigade, W. H. L. Wallace's Division, Army of the Tennessee) was one of the regiments that was also surrounded here. 223 of its officers and men were captured at 5:30 p.m.
