Seminary Ridge Support

Around 1:00 p.m. on July 3, 1863, over 150 Confederate guns began an artillery bombardment along Seminary Ridge. In order to save valuable ammunition for the infantry attack that they suspected would follow, the Federal artillery, under the command of General Henry Hunt, initially held its fire. Eventually, dozens of pieces responded. Many of the Confederate rounds overshot their targets and landed around General Meade's headquarters along the Taneytown Road. In these woods, over 12,000 men from North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi were preparing to step out and advance toward Cemetery Ridge.
