Mt. Carmel Cemetery

Fighting amongst the cemetery headstones on October 19, 1864, Union General George Washington Getty’s Division held this hill for over an hour and slowed the Confederate advance. Getty repulsed two infantry assaults and then endured an artillery bombardment. Facing a third attack that threatened to cut him off, Getty finally ordered a withdrawal.
