St. George's Episcopal Church
Description
Located at the intersection of Princess Anne and George Streets, St. George's Episcopal Church remains one of the most recognizable in this historic city. It most assuredly would have been for the thousands of troops from both sides who went through here during the war as well. George Washington's mother, Mary Ball Washington, attended services with local family members in the original wooden church that was completed in 1741. A newer brick building was finished in 1815 before it was again replaced by today's surviving building in 1849. During the December 1862 battle, St. George's was both damaged by artillery fire and used as a Union command post after Federal forces occupied the city.
