Iowa And Wallace

Dedicated in 1906, the Iowa State Monument commemorates the service of over 6,500 Iowa soldiers who were engaged at Shiloh. It is the largest on the battlefield. Positioned nearby is the pyramid monument for General William H. L. Wallace's Headquarters (Second Division, Army of the Tennessee). After holding in the Hornet's Nest on April 6, 1862, Wallace was shot down. Considered to be dead after his men were overrun, he was later found to still be alive. Wallace was brought to the Cherry Mansion in Savannah where he would perish next to his wife Ann. She had traveled to the front and tended to him for three days.
