1st Massachusetts Sharp Shooters

Located near The Angle along Hancock Avenue, the main monument to the 1st Massachusetts Sharp Shooters was erected in 1886. After they had originally been formed for Hiram Berdan's sharpshooter units, two companies from Massachusetts chose to keep their respective state's designation. While it was sufficiently independent, the 1st Company was unattached and in action in different positions. With 50 men, it lost two killed and six wounded.
