Confederate Memorial

For the memory of all Southern troops who fought in the great April 1862 battle, this vivid memorial was erected in 1917 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It marks the spot where Confederate troops encircled the surrendering Federals in the Hornet's Nest. At the center of the monument's base is a carved bust of the overall army commander, General Albert Sidney Johnston. Infantry, cavalry, and artillery figures are depicted on the sides as if they are enduring the battle. In the middle, figures represent all of the hopes and sorrows of those who filled the ranks alongside the South's other native sons.
