Marye's Angel

Shortly after the main Union assaults against the stone wall at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, Richard Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina came to the aid of the wounded and dying by stepping over the wall with filled canteens. He has since been known as "The Angel of Marye's Heights."
