Esteemed Company
Description
Located across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Chatham Manor was built from 1768-1771 by William Fitzhugh. This elegant mansion served as Union headquarters and field hospitals throughout different times of the Civil War. It is perhaps the only known standing residence to have had George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln all visit. Additionally, a few other notable figures to have been here include Robert E. Lee, Clara Barton, and Walt Whitman. Barton and Whitman both arrived around the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg and served as field nurses.
