U.S. Sharpshooters

Description

Before the main attacks against the Unfinished Railroad at the Battle of Second Manassas, Colonel Hiram Berdan's 1st U.S. Sharpshooters advanced from the Groveton-Sudley Road and into the open. They kept up a steady fire with their Sharps rifles and drove back countering Southern skirmishers. The sharpshooters became pinned down here along the dry creek bed. After the war, a veteran of the sharpshooters, George E. Albee, returned to visit this site where he had been wounded and placed a sign on a tall post to mark the location of his company during the attack. Today's sign is a replacement from the original.
