Matthew Holzman

Robinson Lane

Description

On July 21, 1861, Colonel Wade Hampton's 600 South Carolinians took up positions in the Robinson Farm lane as Union forces broke the lines on Matthews Hill to the north. For a time, they were the only real resistance making an organized stand on this side of the Warrenton Turnpike. Federals eventually advanced and fired into Hampton’s men. This compelled these Southerners to fall back from the lane and look for assistance. The battle was reaching a crucial point.
