Sunset Rock

Description

From here on October 28, 1863, Confederate Generals Braxton Bragg and James Longstreet watched Joseph Hooker's Federal troops arrive and enter Lookout Valley below. Many of these same men from the Army of the Potomac had just defended Culp's and Cemetery Hills at Gettysburg only months earlier. They were brought to Tennessee to help break the hold around the City of Chattanooga. Southern leadership determined to oppose the Union force that evening. The result was the Battle of Wauhatchie. Fought at midnight, it resulted in the repulse of the Confederates.
