End Of Sheridan's Ride

Located off the historic Valley Pike (modern U.S. Route 11) and just north of Middletown, this Virginia State historical marker denotes the position of the beaten back elements of the Army of the Shenandoah when General Phil Sheridan arrived here around 10:30 a.m. on October 19, 1864. After an energized ride down from Winchester, his arrival certainly helped to rally and organize Union units for turning back the tide of Jubal Early's attacking Southerners.
