Stone Bridge

Description

Carrying the Warrenton Turnpike’s traffic over Bull Run, converging forces from both sides soon realized the Stone Bridge’s importance in the area. Consequentially, the opening Union artillery shots of the battle were fired just to the east. While today's standing structure was rebuilt after the Civil War, the original that was constructed in the 1820s provided a pathway of retreat for Federal forces.

Once again in the vicinity in early 1862, Confederate forces would destroy the bridge so that it couldn’t be further used. A makeshift wooden span over the same location was put up. This crossing would again be utilized by fleeing Union troops during the second major battle here in late August 1862.
