The Dead Angle

Description

On the morning of June 27, 1864, thousands of Union soldiers advanced across the field below and up the slopes toward the Southerners who were positioned in their earthworks. Many holding the line here were from Tennessee. Even after sustaining hundreds of casualties, groupings of Federals reached these Confederate defenses and up close, intense fighting ensued. The ground and resistance proved to be too overwhelming and the Union assault was broken. Veterans from both sides named this area “The Dead Angle.” Today, this site can be visited on Cheatham Hill.
