Upper Crossing

Description

Thousands of Union soldiers would have crossed the pontoon bridges built here at the Upper Crossing location on the Rappahannock River. As accounts note, shells crashed into the water as they crossed. Several units were inevitably heading into the City of Fredericksburg before charging Marye’s Heights on December 13, 1862.
