Description

After crossing the small stretch of the Appomattox River near this location, Confederate General Robert E. Lee rode up into the village of Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. He was heading to the McLean House to meet with Union General Ulysses S. Grant and help draft the terms for his Army of Northern Virginia's surrender.
