History's Steps

Description

In 1816, "Chancellorsville" was originally opened as a roadside inn. As the battle raged all around this intersection, Union General Joseph Hooker used the structure as his headquarters. On May 3, 1863, a Confederate shell struck the porch column against which Hooker was leaning and knocked him down. Eventually, Robert E. Lee's victorious troops swarmed into this clearing to cheer their General. Today, the stone steps and an outlined foundation are all that remain of "Chancellorsville."
