Posterity's Crossroads

Description

First called Clover Hill, the village became the Appomattox County seat in 1845. Both the original and rebuilt structures around today’s historic village provide visitors with the necessary atmosphere to try to imagine and contemplate the period.

On April 9, 1865, Generals Grant and Lee met in the McLean House parlor to discuss the final terms of the Army of Northern Virginia's surrender. We only have the dialogue for several minutes. The two men and their supporting staff members were in the room for over an hour. Curiosity makes you wonder what may have been discussed and exchanged. From the old army days, details of their personal lives, the struggles that transpired over the war, and everything else in between. Forever lost to history.
