On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee met with Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the McLean House to discuss the terms for surrendering his Army of Northern Virginia. It was agreed upon that Southern troops would be issued parole passes, Northern rations would be shared, and that men could keep their own mounts. Lee said he thought that would have a happy effect.
