McKinley Monument

Description

During the Maryland Campaign, future U.S. President William McKinley was a Commissary Sergeant in Company E of the 23rd Ohio Infantry. He served coffee and food to his comrades during the battle. Today, McKinley is honored with this monument near the Burnside Bridge largely for his postwar career and legacy. During the advance against the Confederate line, the 23rd sustained 69 casualties (8 killed, 59 wounded, and 2 missing).
